Magnificent Monochrome
Apparently back in the early 1800's black wedding dresses were worn only by the very wealthy as a sign of their affluence. However, you may be pleased to know, that black is back! And thankfully it is now affordable too.
The thought of having black as part of your wedding theme even 10 years ago 
would have been enough to see your Mother-in-Law running for the holy water in order to vanquish whatever demon she thinks may have possessed her daughter-in-law to be. A monochrome theme will work with more or less any location and you can even ask your guests to join in with monochrome themed outfits which will really give an effortlessly cool feel to your day!
The key to going monochrome is to start as you mean to go on. After all, you are sure to have laid down some ground rules before agreeing to the marriage in the first place so why not do so with the wedding guests as well! From the moment the guests arrive, the theme itself should be striking. Being brave with the venue decoration is the way to go with monochrome. If you are the outrageous type go for bold striking contrasts. Seat covers and table decoration are the obvious choice for a fairly low cost way to turn any room from the ordinary into the spectacular. Centrepieces featuring ostrich feathers or contrasting lilies with generous amounts of black ribbon will really stand out as will co-ordinated table numbers and seating plans.

If you prefer to make your statement subtlety but just as well, use a predominantly white theme with touches of black throughout.
If you are holding your wedding in a marquee, you will have a blank canvass with means that the possibilities are endless! Consider everything from the simple such as a black and white pattered dance floor to the clever such as black ceiling or wall swags.
When it comes to the cake, less is more. Layering will quite simply result in a breathtaking masterpiece of monochrome. Add flowers or other decoration such as hearts or feathers to capture the sub theme but take care not to overdo things, after all there will be plenty of chance for this when the best man makes his speech!

And finally, for a fun twist to the theme why not use patterns such as polka dot or accessories such as everton mints or carefully selected dolly mixtures. If your nerves will take it and the heavy drinkers can be otherwise occupied for most of the day, why not serve black and white Russians. Quite simply, whatever your budget and however far you want to take it, monochrome is a great way to really make a statement - it's as clear as black and white!
