Children and weddings
A wedding day can be an incredibly long day for little ones who notoriously have a short attention span and the smaller ones often get over tired and over excited.
So, outside of excluding children altogether from your special day (which may be appropriate for some weddings), your best bet it to ensure that they are kept fed, watered and entertained so that everyone can relax and enjoy the whole occasion - adults and children!
First things first - SafetyIt is important that if you are having small children at your wedding, you are careful about choosing a wedding venue that is safe for them. It is so easy to take your eye of small children at the best of times, never mind at a busy wedding and so it might be a wise idea not to choose a venue that is close to water. This is particularly important if you plan on allowing the children to play outside during the day.
It is also a good idea to ensure that you do not put any flowers in bridesmaid posies that have berries
or thorns in them.
Candles are a popular table decoration; however, it might be worth erring on the side of caution if you have a lot of small children at your event as it can be easy for confetti & paper to get set alight.
Remember to ask your venue if they provide highchairs, and check how many you will need too.
If your venue is suitable, then why not set aside a children only area where they can have their own table. This would allow you to have things such as candles on the adult tables while decorating the children’s’ tables in a way that would be fun for them. This may only be suitable for those parents with children of an age where they can sit in chairs, rather than high chairs, unless you have also decided to employ someone to supervise the children.
During the ceremony itself, ask your ushers to ensure that parents with children are seated on the end of aisles so that they are able to make a quick exit with little ones, should they need to.

It is a fact that children become fidgety when they are bored, so why not give them a goodie bag in much the same way as you do at children’s parties, with things that will keep them amused. Also, you could cover their table in a white paper tablecloth and give them crayons with which to decorate it or perhaps give each child a picture to colour in.
Event Smiles offer a great solution. Personalised boxes filled with quality toys and creative products, each carefully chosen to suit both the age and gender of its recipient. With six price options available and catering for children from birth to fourteen years, ‘Smiles’ offer great entertainment and value for money. They are well thought out and contain products that provide table top amusement for use throughout the meal and speeches, whilst also having elements that can be shared with others later. Noise and mess are kept to an absolute minimum too!
If you want to go the whole hog – you could hire a Children’s Entertainer for the day. There are specialist companies that provide such services, or alternatively if you know of any day nurseries in your local area it might be worth getting in touch with them to see whether they would be happy to assist you, but do check whether or not their insurance would cover them for this, and of course get some recommendations from other parents first.
You could even hire a bouncy castle if you have the grounds in which to put it, not only would this keep them amused, but it would get rid of some of their excess energy. Or perhaps provide them with skipping ropes and hoops.
Again, you would need to ensure that they are supervised by someone responsible.
Happy tummies = happy children
It might be wise to ensure that there are some snacks available for the children while they are waiting for their meal, particularly if your wedding is taking place later in the day. Snacks such as popcorn are great because they are full of air and so will not ruin their appetite and won’t stain their clothes!
Happy children = Happy parents!
All in all, if you are able to keep the children at your wedding happy (or get someone else to) it means everyone involved can concentrate on enjoying your day!
Enjoy!
